Several of our staff hold degrees in animal studies, making us a great resource when it comes to understanding different food types and analyzing ingredient labels. We are happy to explain what to look for and what to avoid. The right nutrition and caloric intake can make a positive difference in your pet’s overall health, performance, and appearance.

Canine and Feline Feeding and Care Tips
- If you have a puppy, follow a generally accepted vaccination schedule that begins at 6-8 weeks and ends at 12-16 months. Mature dogs need additional vaccinations for DHPP every 1-2 years and Rabies every 1-3 years.
- Kitten vaccinations begin at 6-8 weeks and require two additional vaccination visits after that. Mature cat vaccinations can vary and should be discussed with your veterinarian.
- The traditional age for spaying or neutering a dog or cat is about 6 months. Be sure to discuss the benefits and risks associated with this procedure with your veterinarian.
- Provide clean, fresh water daily. Consider using a pet drinking fountain that won’t spill easily. Stainless steel bowls are also a good option as they are less prone to developing bacteria on their surface and won’t crack or shatter.
- Feed your mature dog or cat twice a day.
- Give treats sparingly. Treats should not represent more than 5-10% of their diet.
- Never keep canned food in your pet’s bowl for more than an hour or two. Open cans must be refrigerated and discarded after 2 or 3 days.
- Make sure your mature dog sees the vet every 6 months for a routine wellness visit; Mature cats should have a checkup at least once a year.
- Purchase an ID tag for your pet. It’s their ticket home should they ever get lost.
- Discuss flea control solutions with your vet for the spring and summer months.
- Make sure your dog gets plenty of outdoor exercise including regular walks.
- Cats need exercise, too. Play with your cat each day using toys, lasers, and other objects that peak their curiosity, batting, and hunting skills.
- For cats, their litter box should be kept away from food and water sources in a semi-private place that’s easy for them to get to. Cats are clean animals so their boxes should be scooped for feces every day. The clay litter should be removed every 2-3 days and the box itself cleaned with mild soap and water. Keep one litter box on each floor of your home.
- Do not leave your pet unattended in an excessively hot or cold environment.
- Call your veterinarian if your pet shows signs of diarrhea, vomiting or lethargy continue for more than one or two days.
- Keep up with regular grooming and nail trimming.
- Never feed your pet the following foods as outlined by the ASPCA’s Animal Poison Control Center: alcohol, avocados, chives, citrus fruits, chocolate/coffee/caffeine, coconut, garlic, grapes and raisins, milk and dairy-based products, nuts, onions, raw or undercooked meat or eggs, salty snacks, xylitol sweetener, or yeast dough.
